River North
The greatest concentration of galleries in Chicago can be found in River North—many within a block or two from the intersection of Superior and Franklin Streets. The district’s boundaries are generally: Chicago Avenue on the north; the Merchandise Mart on the south; west to Orleans Street and east to Dearborn.

West Loop
The West Side “district” incorporates Randolph and Fulton Markets, West Loop Gate, and other near west side locations. Boundaries for this guide are: Chicago Avenue on the north; Halsted on the east, and Roosevelt Road on the south. The largest gallery centers in this “district” are near the intersection of Peoria and Washington and in the Fulton Market area between Peoria and Racine.

Pilsen/South Side
Our South Side map covers a vast part of the city from Roosevelt Road south to the Indiana border; Central Avenue on the west and east to Lake Michigan. Neighborhoods include Pilsen, Bridgeport, Hyde Park, Chinatown and Bronzeville. The largest concentration of galleries in the area is in Pilsen East’s Chicago Arts District, near Halsted and 18th Streets. Among other major south side art destinations are: the Museum Campus (Adler Planetarium, Field Museum, Shedd Aquarium), National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum, Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, DuSable Museum, and the museums on the University of Chicago campus.

Michigan Avenue/River East/South Loop
Approximately 25 galleries can be found along the “Magnificent Mile” from Oak Street to the River and further south near The Art Institute and Millennium Park. Some are in interesting ground-floor spaces just steps from Michigan Avenue; others are a short walking distance or elevator ride high above the city. Also included in the this area are The Museum of Contemporary Art, the River East Art Center and Navy Pier.

North/Bucktown/Wicker Park
Old Town and The Clybourn Corridor offer two North Side clusters of galleries, but the “district” covers a broad geographical area including a number of interesting neighborhoods such as Bucktown, Wicker Park, Lakeview, and Lincoln Park. Besides galleries, the north side includes the Chicago Historical Society, streets surrounding the Coyote Tower (North/Milwaukee/Damen), and scores of artists living and working in Chicago.

Suburbs and Beyond
Beyond the city limits, the Chicago art scene continues with galleries and university spaces. Some are in Evanston— just 5 miles north of the city near Northwestern University; others are in Oak Park near the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio; and many can be found in nearby suburbs and neighboring states.

Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. Art Group includes: The Armory Show, Art Chicago, NEXT, Toronto International Art Fair, VOLTA and VOLTA NY.
