Spotlight

The late Carl N. Rist Sr., was born on October 20, 1902 in Lindau Bodense, Germany. After finishing school at the age of 13, he made up his mind to become an upholsterer. This required him to go through a four-year apprenticeship. In 1927, he came to America, where he worked in some of the finest upholstery shops in the world. Five years later, he married and moved to Doylestown, PA, where he started his own upholstery business. Jules Rist, Carl’s son, and his brother worked with their father, beginning Jules’ career in fine upholstery.

Jules’ career in various sectors of the home furnishings industry has spanned 50 years. After working 11 years for his father, he then served as an upholstered furniture buyer for a major Philadelphia department store. Between

1971 and 1983, Jules opened three Interior Design and Retail Shops in the suburban Washington, DC area. In November 1983, he became a charter tenant at The Washington Design Center, where he opened his first showroom to the trade — ably assisted by his sons and a fine staff.

In September of 1993, Jules turned over the reins to his son, Mark C. Rist, VP. This enabled Jules to move to North Carolina to oversee the upholstered furniture plant which they purchased in 1989. For the last 14 years, Jules has enjoyed developing and refining their product line with a staff of experienced craftsmen. In recent years, Jules has been joined by his sons-in-law who have assisted in all aspects of the business. With God’s continued help, the Rist family looks forward to serving you for years to come.
